Highest in Apolobamba

Chaupi Orco (6044m) is the highest mountain in the Cordillera Apolobamba Mountain range which is located northeast of Lake Titicaca near Peruvian Border. Chaupi Orco is rarely climbing and also has one of the largest glaciers in Bolivia. This is still a very remote area of Bolivia, which is beautiful, and life continues in a traditional way with the area largely being untouched by modern society, which makes for a memorable experience.

Day 1: La Paz (3600m) - Pelechuco (3600m)

Today we travel from La Paz up to El Alto and across the Altiplano, passing through the Area Protegida Apolobamba before arriving in the colonial village of Pelechuco, where the main economic activity is gold mining.We will spend the night here in Pelechuco.
8 - 9 hour drive (LD) Hostel

Day 2: Pelechuco - Lago Soral (4120m)

First part of the day is Ascending by 4x4 to Paso Sanches (4840m) and continuing steeply downhill until we reach a river. Then it’s back uphill over another pass and eventually on the other side of this pass we will reach the large and sedimented Lago Soral. Free afternoon to explore the area to help with acclimatizing.
2 - 3 hour drive (BLD) camping

Day 3: Lago Soral (4120m) - High camp (5200m)

In the morning we will meet the Llamas to carry our equipment to high camp. The trek up to high camp follows animal tracks up the old glacial valley. Later we meet a moraine ridge which takes as to high camp. After walking along this ridge, we will drop down to walk along the glacier, as far up as we can. here we will make high camp next to a small lake.
5 - 6 hour trek (BLD) camping

Day 4: High camp - Summit (6044m) - High camp - Base camp, Lago Soral

Today is our summit day. We will take the East Ridge Route which will take us first through a crevasse field, then to a ridge which will lead us up to various false summits and then eventually the true summit. We will climb the same way back down, stopping at high camp to meet the Llamas and then continue down to Lago Soral, were we will camp for the night.
12 - 18 hour climb (BLD) camping

Day 5: Base camp - Pelechuco - La Paz

After an early breakfast we pack up camp and drive back to Pelechuco. Stop for a short break before we continua onto La Paz. Along the way we can make some small stops to visit the Ulla Ulla vicuna reserve and dome houses in the area near Ulla Ulla. Drop off at hotel.
