Overview

Spectacular Salar de Uyuni, Volcanos and flamingo fill lakes

We begin this epic journey by driving out across the wild and barren Altiplano to Sajama. Silence broken only by the wind and llamas. The following days are spent on one of Bolivia’s – and the world’s – great wonders, the salt flats of Uyuni and Sajama National Park. Where the tallest mountains stand in Bolivia. Depending on the season the Salar de Uyuni a vast expanse can appear like a mirror for the heavens or an unending sea of snow. Throughout this trip we can see a variety of wildlife and spectacular views of these extraordinary landscapes.

Day 1: La Paz (3600m) - Sajama, Tomarapi Village (4300m)

We will drive from La Paz through El Alto and onto the Altiplano (4000m), which is open and dry. We will see people in this area living and herding their llamas. Along the way we will stop at Carahuara de Carangas church, the 16th chapel of the Altiplano. From a long distance, we get views of Sajama, lonely by itself. We will stay the night in the village of Sajama. Later we can visit the hot springs, geyser and Laguna Huana Khota.
4 - 5 hour drive, times include stops (LD) Hotel, community run hotel

Day 2: Sajama Tomarapi Village - Chipaya (3786m)

We make an early start for the beautiful drive to Chipaya. We pass close to the Chile/Bolivian border, making stops along the way to visit Laguna Macaya, Rio Lauca, Laguna Sakewa and ancient Inca Tombs. We make picnic lunch at Laguna Sakewa, giving you plenty of time to take photos and visit the area. After lunch we keep driving south and make stops for the views along the way. At Chipaya, the oldest tribe on the Altiplano we stay at the community run hotel. The area is known for their round houses built out of grass blocks. The hotel has a resembling architecture to their traditional housing.
5 - 6 hour drive, times include stops (BLD) Hotel, community run hotel

Day 3: Chipaya - Alcaya (3800m) - Tahua (3700m)

Another full day visiting this incredible land scape. After breaks we keep heading south and visit some of the houses in the Chipaya area. Next stop is the sand dunes of Ayparavi. We can climb these dunes and reach a height of 20 to 30 meters giving a good view of the other dunes in the distance. We drive a bit further to Laguna Paraiso, a small lake with an abundant of bird life. We stop here for a picnic lunch. After the next stop is the ruins of the Alcaya village, believed to be descendants of Chullpa civilization and one of the oldest Andean civilization to date. We make a small walk and visit their strange house, old tombs and mummies. We have a short drive to Salinas Gracia de Mendoza for Gasoline before reaching Tahua. Tahua sits on the edge of the Salar and near volcano Tunupa (5321m). In the evening we can see the sunset over the Salar and watch different colors on the horizon.
6 - 7 hour drive, times include stops (BLD) Hotel Tayka de Sal 3*

Day 4: Tahua - Uyuni Salt Flats (3653m) - Isla de Incahuasi - Uyuni (3669m)

Today is perhaps the most spectacular. We visit the salt flats of the Salar,
stopping first at Coquesa where we make a short walk to some caves and visit some mummified remains. Next is Isla Incahuasi in the middle of the salt flats where you can explore the island by foot. We will stop for lunch here, so there’s plenty of time to take photos of this natural wonder. We take the road that heads to Uyuni and stop at the salt hotel, salt mines, markets at Colchane and the train cemetery. In the evening we can visit the town of Uyuni. Drop off at hotel

END OF SERVICES

NOTE: You add other destinations onto this tour eg, continue south to Laguna Colorada and continue onto Chile. Climb peaks in the area, head east towards Potosi or take a flight back to La Paz. Ask us for more information about our extensions.
