Overview

Third highest in Bolivia 

On this trip we get to climb the third highest mountain in Bolivia, Ancohuma which is rarely climbed, although the climb is not technical, it is changeling. Ancohuma sits in the north of the Cordillera Real and part of a group of mountains which include Illampu and Pico Norte. The actual height of this mountain is widely debated, with some believing it to be over 7000m, therefore making this the highest mountain in the Andes and outside of the Himalayas. This is a changeling trip for unforgettable experience.

Day 1; La Paz (3600m) - Sorata (2700m) - Laguna Chilate (4200m)

Our first day is the drive to Sorata. As we head out of La Paz into the city of Al alto with have great views of La Paz city and the surrounding mountains. Later we cross the Altiplano were we pass most of the Cordillera Real. After 2 hours we reach a pass which takes us down into the valley of Sorata. A long the way we stop for photos of Illampu, one of the most impressive looking mountains in the Cordillera Real. Once in Sorata we notice the climate is much warmer and is a great place to relax in the Plaza. We stop here for lunch before we start trekking up to Laguna Chilate. From Sorata we drive to the village Colani where we meet the mules. following the trails from villages nearby. We can easily get lost here in the maze of tracks. It’s good climb upand we have nice views of the valley below us. 3 - 4 hour drive, 3 - 4 hour trek (LD) Camping

Day 2: Laguna Chilate - Laguna Glaciar (5050m)

Following a small track, we will climb over old moraine walls with Pico Shultz below. After climbing over rock slabs, we reach Laguna Glaciar, where we will set up camp. From here we have great views over the Lake Titicaca and into Peru. Camp is nestled between Illampu and Ancohuma with a glacier in between both mountains.
3 - 4 hour trek (BLD) camping

Day 3: Laguna Glaciar (Base camp) - High camp Ancohuma (5400m)

This day is short, so we have a free morning and leave after lunch. Camp sits next the glacier on the rock. As the glacier has receded over the years it can be hard to get on the glacier. Porters carry our gear up to high camp.
2 - 3 hour trek (BLD) camping

Day 4: High camp - Summit Ancohuma (6427m) - High camp - Base camp

An early start for the summit as it is a long day. We start walking on the glacier to 6000m, from here we have a 400m climb to the summit. There is a small cornice to climb to gain the ridge to the summit. Once on the summit we can see Illampu (6356m) and Laguna Negra. After a short rest we will head back down the same way to high camp where we meet the porters who take all the equipment and personal gear back down to base camp.
10 - 16 hour climb (BLD) camping

Day 5: Base camp - Sorata - La Paz

In the morning we pack up camp and meet the Porters. We have an easy walk back down to Colani. Here we meet our transport. First we drive back to Sorata for lunch and then onto La Paz. Drop off at hotel.
