Overview

Classic alpine trekking

The Trans Cordillera is one of the more popular treks in the Cordillera Real. On this trek, we only trek a part of the Trans cordillera Real. The part is on the Altiplano where we will cross several passes allowing you spectacular views of the Cordillera. You will see beautiful valleys, glacial lakes and wildlife and you will also have the opportunity to meet indigenous communities that are largely untouched by modern society.

Day 1: La Paz (3600m) - Lake Quta Qutia (4450m) - Laguna Ajwani (4600m)

In the morning, we drive out to Lake Quta Qutia. Our drive takes us through the city of Al Alto. After leaving the city of Al Alto we head keep heading north on the highway until we reach a road heading up one of the valleys to the base of the mountains in the Cordillera Real. Once we reach Lago Quta Qutia we have some lunch and start out trek. We have a short climb to small pass. From the pass, we can see out next camp across the valley. After the pass, we have steep downhill to the bottom where we cross the valley and have a rising traverse to Laguan Ajwani. Our gear is taken by vehicle to our camp we will have time to check out the area and the lakes nearby.
3 hour drive, 3 - 4 hour trek (LD) camping
Distance 11 km, elevation gain +670m, elevation loss - 520m, highest altitude reached 4900m

Day 2: Laguna Ajwañi - Juri Quta (4500m)

After a good breakfast, we start our trek. We have to cross two passes today. At the first pass we will get our first views of the Cabeza de Condor (5648m), the Matterhorn of Bolivia. Crossing the second we have a short downhill to our camp next the lake Juri Quta.
5 - 6 hour trek (BLD) camping
Distance 7.5 km, elevation gain +570m, elevation loss -500m, highest altitude reached 4900m

Day 3: Juri Quta - Condoriri (4700m)

We have two options today. We can go over Austria Peak (5300m). This route brings us very close to the Cabeza de Condor (5648m), the Matterhorn of Bolivia. Or via one easy pass. The camp is in beautiful surroundings next to a lake with great views of the mountains and if we are lucky, we can have fresh trout for
dinner.
5 - 6 hour trek (BLD) camping
Distance 6.5 km, elevation gain + 780m, elevation loss -830m, highest altitude reached 5300m.

Day 4: Condoriri - Maria Lloco (4700m)

We have a climb first thing in the morning. From the pass looking back we have great views of the Condoriri group. In front of us the impressive west face of Huayna Potosi (1000m) later in the day we meet up with an old road that leads to some old mines. We make camp near Cerro Maria Lloco (5222m).
6 - 8 hour trek (BLD) camping
Distance 16 km, elevation gain + 950m, elevation loss -900m, highest altitude reached 5000m.

Day 5: Maria Lloco - Refugio Huayna Potosí (4700m) - La Paz (3600m)

Today we pass the west face of Huayna Potosi. It looks so close that we can almost touch it. We keep skirting around the base of Huayna Potosi on our left. Later we meet up with the road and our transport. In the afternoon, we drive back to La Paz, drop off at hotel.
4 - 5 hour trek, 1 hour drive (BL)
Distance 9 km, elevation gain + 570m, elevation loss -500m, highest altitude reached 5100m.
